John McCain says experience counts. He talks about readiness to be Commander in Chief. This is whom he thinks should be a heartbeat away from the Presidency:

Sarah Palin’s bio:

Education: After attending five different schools over a 6-year period, Palin graduated from the University of Idaho in 1987 with a degree in sports journalism. She was never involved in any college journalism or journalism groups.

Palin on the VP position: In an interview just a month ago, she dissed the job, saying it didn’t seem “productive.” In fact, she said she didn’t know what the vice president does. Larry Kudlow of CNBC’s “Kudlow & Co.” asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain’s ticket mate.

Palin replied: “As for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question.”

That’s okay Sarah, McCain doesn’t understand economics or geography. He thinks the current recession is “psychological.” You’re a great pair–McCain and not Able.

More Palin positions and an insight into McCain’s judgment:

  • Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.
  • Palin supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000.
  • Palin doesn’t think humans are the cause of climate change.
  • Palin is solidly in line with John McCain’s “Big Oil first” energy policy. She’s pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won’t be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.

How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.
